Despite and Although are both used to contrast two things, but the difference is in the structure of the sentences.

DESPITE

Despite is a preposition. Followed by a noun or pronoun. Cannot link clauses.

Example Sentences;

  • I love him despite his faults.
  • Despite being much older than the others, he won the race.
  • They went out despite the rain.
  • Despite applying for hundred of jobs, she is still out of work.
  • We helped them despite the difficulties.
  • Despite the cool day, he don’t want to go out.

 

ALTHOUGH

Although is a subordinating conjunction. Followed by a clause. Can link clauses.

Example Sentences;

  • Although the weather is cold, everybody is out
  • Although she speaks seldom, she says meaningful words.
  • Although my car is very old, it still runs very well.
  • I don’t want to sleep although I am tired.
  • Although the weather was cold, we decided not to wear our jackets.
  • Although Mark does whatever she asks, she isn’t pleased.
