Prepositions of time – IN





Using “in” as a Preposition of Time

in” is used with;

  • WEEKS

in a week / in one week / in two weeks / in three weeks, etc.



Example: I will come back in two weeks.

  • MONTHS

in January / in February / in March / in April, etc.

Example: The election was held in June.

  • YEARS

in 1990 / in 2015 / in 1856 / in 1770, etc. 

Example: America was discovered in 1492.

  • DECADES

in the 1880’s / in the 1950s / in the 70s

Example: My grandfather was born in the 1950s.

  • CENTURIES

in the 21st century / in the 15th century  

Example: This company was founded in the 20th century.

  • LENGTH OF TIME

in 20 minutes / in one hour  / in a few days, etc.

Example: I will be ready in 10 minutes.

  • PARTS OF THE DAY

in (the) morning / in (the) afternoon / in (the) evening  ( “in” is not used with night )

Example: In the evenings, I like to relax.

  • SEASONS

in the winter/ in the spring/ in the summer / in the autumn 

Example: What time does it get dark in the summer?

  • OTHER TIMES

in the future / in the past / / in (my/your, etc) spare time / in the Ice Age, etc.

Example: What do you like to do in your spare time?
