Prepositions of Time – On





Using “on” as a Preposition of Time

on” is used with;

  • DAYS OF THE WEEK

on Sunday / on Monday / on Friday/ on Wednesday, etc.



Example: She starts her new job on Monday.

  • DAYS OF THE MONTH

on the 1st / on the 15th / on the 23rd / on the 12nd, etc.

Example: He was born on the 16th of the month.

  • DAYS WITH ‘MONTH AND DAY’

on May the 9th / on January the 22nd, etc. 

Example: My birthday is on December the 1st.

  • HOLIDAYS WITH ‘DAY’

on Christmas Day / on Easter Sunday / on my birthday / on a holiday / on New Year’s Eve ( Day ), etc.

Example: The bank is closed on Christmas Day.

  • ON + DAY + PART OF THE DAY

on Sunday morning / on Friday evening / on Tuesday  afternoon / on Saturday night, etc.

Example: I will see you on Monday morning.

  • THE WEEKEND ( US )

on the weekend ( in American English )

Example:

  • What will we do on the weekend? ( in American English ) 
  • What will we do at the weekend?  ( in British English )
